Advantages And Disadvantages Of Fuses And Switches
-May 27, 2021-

Fuses and circuit breakers offer a number of advantages and disadvantages that make te choice of one or the other dependent on the specific situation.

The fuses are cheap and react very fast to overloads offering more protection, which specially interested in highly sensitive or expensive electronic devices. In fact, often the most sensitive electrical appliances have their own fuses.
But the high sensitivity of the fuses can become a disadvantage if we are in a circuit with regular peaks that reach the breakpoint of the fuses frequently.
The fuses have to be replaced with new ones when they blow, which can be a real inconvenience if they are not available at the moment.
Another disadvantage is that fuses are often bought without professional advice and installed by yourself. It is easy and frequent to choose fuses with too high a capacity and this leads to them not fulfilling their protection purpose.
Circuit breakers, meanwhile, have many more advantages. You can restore the electrical current flow as easily as turning the switch back on without having to replace any parts.
Also, tampering with switches is much safer than installing a fuse.
A disadvantage of circuit breakers is that they are normally more expensive, not only the circuit breaker itself but its installation and repair, often having to be done by a professional.
Circuit breakers do not react as fast as fuses, and electronic devices connected to the circuit may be damaged before the circuit breaker trips due to an overload.
Both types of electrical interruption cannot be interchanged in all situations. For example, a fuse cannot be used as a ground fault circuit interrupter. An electrician is a qualified professional to determine if a fuse or switch is better in a certain situation.
